Course Modules

We all face times of being in between, where we’ve left something behind but we don’t know exactly what’s next. This might be in-between jobs, major life decisions, or significant relationships, either through consequences of choices or of unexpected circumstances. In these times we often feel out of control and unsteady in the chaos. This course offers ways to embrace the possibilities and potential benefits of being in-between. Through leaning into this material, you will find a pathway through what feels like chaos but may be instead a meaningful period of powerful transformation.

Embracing Life In-Between Module Six

Module 6: The Posture of an Adventurer – An adventurer is one who is willing to face risk and muster courage to take on the coming changes and challenges. An adventurer uses careful preparation and employs valuable training but when the time comes to go, they go. This is a necessary posture for completing the process of liminal passages, so that the season is not wasted on one who is unwilling to bring the change they have experienced into a new phase of life.

Embracing Life In-Between Module Five

Module 5: The Posture of Readiness - Spiritual disciplines provide the best pathway to sustaining the energy to stick with the long hard journey through liminal space. A posture of readiness requires preparation, intentionality, and execution, but begins with a heart set on dependence on a power greater than ourselves. Liminality can become a black hole that creates inertia, but the posture of readiness prevents stalling out in the long haul. We will cover the disciplines of Simplicity, Listening, Wise Counsel, and Celebration.

Embracing Life In-Between Module Four

Module 4: The Posture of Revision – Removed from our structures that formerly defined us, we are given an opportunity to reexamine our identity, our beliefs, and our definitions of life, self, meaning and God. When we are operating in the center of comfort and safety, we are by definition staying true to the structures that have been built to define us, which in turn provide safe operating rules. From the margins, we can see the structure for what it is and receive wisdom concerning our part in transforming it.

Embracing Life In-Between Module Three

Module 3: The Posture of Mourning – Transitions, by definition, require a leaving behind of something that was previously known. In this module we will look at how loss and liminality are traveling companions. Sometimes the leaving may be done by choice and sometimes not. It may be an excruciatingly painful ripping away of something or someone to which we are deeply attached or it may be a joyous unfettering of something unwanted. No matter what is being left behind, the loss of it offers opportunities for valuable processing leading to growth, awareness, compassion, commitment, and renewed stability.

Embracing Life In-Between Module Two

Module 2: The Posture of Hospitality – The potential for fully engaging the benefits of change lies in our honoring of thresholds. Valuing boundaries, lines and border crossings requires us to nurture the virtue of hospitality. Hospitality is a posture of receiving, hosting, and serving. In this module we will walk through how taking the posture of hospitality toward God, ourselves, and the unexpected experiences that “drop in” whenever we find ourselves crossing thresholds has powerful implications for fully embracing and receiving the gifts of liminal passageways.

Embracing Life In-Between Module One

Module 1: Introduction to Liminal Space (Being In-Between) - Looking at times of transition and the threshold of change from a variety of angles (psychology, spirituality, theology, anthropology) gives us insight into how to process through it well and with a mindset for wholeness. This module will cover these foundations of our understanding of change, as well as social and cultural influences, family of origin structures, and personality tendencies. We will be introduced to the various “postures” we can take in response to being caught in-between.
